There’s a particular kind of trust that builds over time when you sit in someone’s chair and let them take care of you. It’s not just about hair—it’s about routine, familiarity, and the quiet comfort of being known. Today, I was reminded of just how deep that kind of trust can go… because I literally fell asleep at the shampoo bowl.
Not just a light doze, either. Fully asleep. Snoring. Completely surrendered to the moment while a conditioning treatment worked its magic. If there’s ever been a more honest review of a salon experience, I’m not sure what it would be. You don’t fall asleep like that unless you feel safe, relaxed, and completely at ease.
But beneath that peaceful moment, there was a heaviness in the air.
I learned today that the salon has been going through a difficult time. A couple of weeks ago, some conflict involving a former employee spilled onto social media. I didn’t see any of it myself, but from what I understand, it escalated quickly—arguments, accusations, and a lot of public back-and-forth. The kind of thing that takes on a life of its own once it’s out there.
And the impact has been real. The phone hasn’t been ringing like it used to. Several stylists have left and moved on to other places. What was once a full, bustling salon is now down to just a handful of people trying to hold things together. It’s hard not to feel disheartened hearing that, especially when you’ve been a loyal client for years and have seen the care and dedication that built that business in the first place.
It’s also a sobering reminder of how powerful—and fragile—reputation can be in the age of social media. One voice, one moment, one narrative can ripple outward and change everything, regardless of how long something has been built or how many positive experiences came before it.
And yet… sitting in that chair today, none of that showed up in the work.
My stylist was as attentive, kind, and skilled as ever. My hair looks and feels amazing. The same level of care was there, even if the environment around it has shifted. That says something. Maybe it says everything.
We often talk about supporting small businesses, but moments like this bring that idea into sharper focus. Behind every appointment is a person who has invested years into their craft. Behind every salon is a story, a team, and a livelihood that can be affected in ways we don’t always see from the outside.
I don’t know what will happen next for the salon. I don’t know how things will settle or what the future holds for the team that’s still there. But I do know this—I hope I get to keep sitting in that chair. I hope I get to keep trusting the same hands with my hair. And, apparently, I hope I get to keep falling asleep at the shampoo bowl.
Because sometimes, even in the middle of uncertainty, there are still small, quiet moments that remind you what’s worth holding onto.
